Instagram is reportedly considering making a separate app dedicated to their Reels feature. According to The Information, Instagram chief Adam Mosseri informed his staff of Meta’s upcoming plans to create a stand-alone app version of Instagram’s short-form video feature, Reels.
The publication added that this could be a way for Meta-owned Instagram to take advantage of TikTok’s uncertain status in the United States. With the way RedNote, aka Xiaohongshu, took the US by a storm during the short-lived TikTok ban, it could be possible that Mosseri is hoping for a similar welcome to the rumoured Reels app.

This would not be the first time Meta gets its inspiration from TikTok. Just a few weeks ago, Meta announced its upcoming Instagram-developed Edits app, a video-editing app that is basically its version of CapCut, owned by TikTok’s parent company ByteDance.
There have been no direct confirmations on this rumour yet, as Meta is reportedly considering its moves internally. It could be a while before we ever get to see a Reels app, if ever.
