Shuhei Yoshida, the former exec that served as the head of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) Worldwide Studios for 38 years, recently gave his opinion about when the PlayStation 6 (PS6) would hit the market. He says that it’ll be a few more years before that happens.
In an interview with VentureBeat’s gaming arm, GamesBeat, Yoshida told the online portal that consumers shouldn’t expect the PS6 to appear before 2028. He also stated that if Sony sticks to its seven-year gap, though, then the console could arrive as early as 2027 but he feels that that’s too soon.

“The PS5 generation was slowed down because of manufacturing issues. If the next PlayStation comes out in 2028, that feels right to me. Microsoft had their leak about a 2028 plan. Maybe both of them will come out then. There are diminishing returns from the semiconductors.”
Yoshida also attributes the longer console lifecycles to the overreaction of manufacturers to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Companies invested too much, including ourselves. Then we had to face reality and make adjustments. If you take out the COVID years you’d have smoother growth over the years.”

The Sony PS5 Pro officially came on to the scene on 7 November. Prior to that, it was also reported that Sony was developing two SoCs for the PS6, stoking further speculation that the Japanese company had two variations of the unreleased console in the works. Given its roadmap and past performance, they’re probably a Standard and “Slim” version of the console.
