ARM is supposedly gearing up towards making its own chips, so much so that it is being reported that the company has begin recruiting engineers and chip designers from within its own pool of customers.
According to Reuters, ARM has been ramping up its effort in assembling a “crack” team of specialists, including executives from licensees. Further, it plans on competing directly against Qualcomm, ironically one of its biggest customers, and sell datacentre CPUs to companies like Meta.
A message sent by a recruiter at ARM seemingly confirmed the company’s actions, indicating that its desire to hire executives lines up with the “transformation from solely designing processor architecture (IP) to also selling its own silicon, with a focus on driving AI enablement in the datacentre”.
The idea of ARM designing, manufacturing, and selling its own silicon isn’t as farfetched. Earlier last year, rumours began flying that the chipmaker was planning on building its own GPU, although it is still unknown if said component is going to be for the desktop or the mobile space.
At the time of writing, ARM did not provide a statement over its alleged actions.
