Spotify is reportedly weighing out whether it wants to charge an additional US$5.99 (~RM27) a month, on top of existing subscriptions, to justify a potential and new super-fan streaming service. In all consideration, this add-on price could bring about remixing tools, access to concert tickets and hopefully, access to higher-quality bitrates.
According to Bloomberg, Spotify hopes to roll out its Music Pro tier by this year, although the final pricing and launch date have yet to be determined. The company is reportedly still ironing out the edges on the matter, with the subject of pricing to vary depending on geography, with costs being lower in less-developed markets.
Bloomberg’s reporting matches with an earlier story. Back in July last year, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek confirmed that a new “Deluxe” subscription was indeed over the horizon, and even mentioned the possibility of current subscribers having to pay a premium in order to access it.
Having said that, it is important to remember that the prospect of a higher-tier Spotify premium has been coming out of the rumour mill for years and until we see something tangible, we’re keeping our fingers crossed.
