As users gravitate away from the major social media platforms, alternative networks emerge to provide these users with a familiar experience. One of these alternatives is Pinksky, an Instagram-like app built on top of Bluesky, which released its Android version on Tuesday.
The app was previously already available for iOS and mimics Instagram’s format including a photo and video feed, as well as a Stories section. As it is built on Bluesky, users must use their Bluesky accounts to access Pinksky. One advantage is that those already on the platform will immediately have their existing social networks available upon first login.

While Pinksky is conceived as a photo-centric app, users are limited to a maximum of four photos per post and videos of up to only one minute. These constraints are due to Bluesky’s own limitations.
The app was built by developer Ramon Souza, whose work is mainly focused on web technologies. According to TechCrunch, Souza’s interest in open technologies inspired Pinksky’s creation, appealing to the users interested in making connections through sharing photos rather than engaging with viral and influencer content. In essence, the platform aims to embody the traditional Instagram experience.

Souza claims that Pinksky is just an experiment and that further interest could change its future. The app’s longevity is up in the air as it is one of many Instagram clones emerging in the current social media landscape. One such example is Tiktok’s sub-platform Whee, which was launched in June of last year.
