The Chinese-developed AI model DeepSeek has been making the news, arguably for both right and wrong reasons. But it seems that it was been enough of an inspiration for the state of Sarawak to want to develop its own AI model. In fact, the inspiration goes as far as to determine name of said AI model, with the state premier proposing to call DeepSar.
According to Bernama, Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Openg said that he was inspired by the success of DeepSeek, the Chinese AI model by engineer Liang Wenfeng. The report cites the minister as saying that “I hope one day, we will have DeepSar, founded by Sarawakians, featuring content unique to Sarawak, facilitating digital conversations between Sarawakians and the world”.

The report also notes that the premier wishes for the state to take advantage of its rich biodiversity, and for information around it to be monetised as new economic opportunities for the state. “When this information is downloaded, it will not be free – 8 billion people could access it, but we must secure patents and rights over our biodiversity resources”, he said.
To that end, Abang Johari has said tasked state-owned SAINS Sdn Bhd with consolidating relevant data. He also said that the state government is promoting the development of microchip design.
