Earlier in the month, Bloomberg reported that Apple has scrapped its AR glasses project, which had previously shifted from being connected to an iPhone to needing a Mac to be paired with. Now, a week later, the news outlet notes that while the glasses that is dependent on an external device may have had its coffin nailed, the bitten fruit brand’s long term goal of making standalone AR glasses remains in place.
Specifically, this comes from the weekly Power On newsletter by Mark Gurman, who was also the first to report on the aforementioned cancellation. In it, Gurman describes the cancelled project as a “stopgap product” that “wasn’t the dream AI glasses that everyone is waiting for”. Instead, Apple is taking its time and being cautious with the standalone glasses, which is the long term goal of the brand’s Vision Products Group.
With that in mind, Apple “will keep working on underlying technology – like screens and silicon – to help make such a device more feasible”. Though with that in mind, the previous estimate by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo about the AR glasses not being a thing until 2026 suddenly sounds pretty optimistic.
In the meantime, fans of this very specific product category now only have the sequel to the Apple Vision Pro to look forward to. These are currently slated for release between late this year and early next, assuming nothing happens between now and then.
