When the feature was first announced late last year, your possible interactions with ChatGPT via Whatsapp were pretty limited. The Meta subsidiary has since announced added features, which allows you to upload images and voice messages as prompts for the chatbot. Previously, this was limited to typing in your prompts and waiting for a response.
That being said, the new features are strictly the ability to use images and voice messages as prompts. All prior limitations to using ChatGPT this way still applies. As in, this particular version of the chatbot has a knowledge cutoff point of January 2022, and doesn’t have access to real-time data as a result. There’s also the limited number of prompts before you get locked out for the day.
📢 1-800-ChatGPT WhatsApp Updates
– You can now upload images when asking a question
– You can talk to ChatGPT using voice messages
– And coming soon, you can link your ChatGPT account (Free, Plus, Pro) for more usage
— OpenAI (@OpenAI) February 5, 2025
You also cannot use paid features of ChatGPT through WhatsApp since you can’t sign into your account when used this way. Not yet, at least, as in the announcement post on X OpenAI says that the ability to link your account -paid or otherwise – through this channel is “coming soon”. No specific date was provided, but there will likely be another announcement when it happens.
Alternatively, and especially if you’ve paid for a Plus or Pro account, you can just get the mobile app for ChatGPT itself. Unless you don’t have an internet connection, in which case you’re just out of luck, as the ability to use it by calling 1-800-242-8478 through your phone line is still limited to the US and Canada.
