Nintendo made a big deal of its teaser trailer for the Switch 2, but the Japanese games company is still keeping its price under wraps for the official launch. Understandably, one would wonder what the next generation console handheld hybrid will cost, especially in relation to its predecessor. In response, the company has provided a vague statement that it will be affordable.
Or more specifically, company president Shuntaro Furukawa said that the company needs “to consider the affordable prices that customers expect from Nintendo products”. This is in response to a question regarding the device’s price in relation to the current inflation and exchange rates situation during the company’s recent financial results briefing. As expected, no specific figures were provided.
On one hand, the statement implies that the Nintendo Switch 2 to be priced around the ballpark of the original. But on the other, there is no reason to doubt that it will be priced higher. Making things worse is that the Furukawa has also confirmed that the first generation hybrid will not see a change in price even after the new device’s launch, at least not the price set by the company itself.

While prices are a fair bit lower today, even for the OLED model, the Switch was first available locally at slightly over the RM2,000 mark. Of course, things have changed slightly since then, as Maxsoft’s local subsidiary M.M. soft is no longer the sole distributor of all things Nintendo in the country. In October of 2023, Convergent Distribution Sdn. Bhd announced that it was appointed the official distributor, but specifically for the Nintendo Switch and products related to it.
And while the latter of the two companies now operate the official Nintendo Store on Shopee and Lazada, the former’s own outlets on both e-commerce platforms are still alive and running. For what it’s worth, Convergent does seem to sell them at a slightly lower price. With all that in mind though, it remains to be see what the Switch 2 will priced like when it becomes available locally.
