Nikon has announced the Coolpix P1100, the latest addition to its super-zoom bridge camera lineup and the long-awaited successor to the P1000, which launched nearly seven years ago. Designed for extreme telephoto photography, the camera features a staggering 125x optical zoom lens, which the company describes as the “gold standard” in its class.
The P1100 retains a similar design to its predecessor, complete with an integrated lens and a protruding front body. Weighing 1,410g, it is slightly lighter than the P1000’s 1,415g. Despite its relatively compact form factor, the camera offers an extraordinary zoom range of 24-3000mm (35mm equivalent), facilitated by a small 16.79-megapixel 1/2.3-inch sensor. The lens construction consists of 17 elements arranged into 12 groups, including five extra-low dispersion elements and one super extra-low dispersion element for enhanced image clarity.
For users requiring even more reach, the P1100 offers a 4x digital zoom option, extending the equivalent focal length to an impressive 12000mm. However, Nikon notes that this will result in image quality degradation. The lens has a floating aperture of f/2.8 at its widest setting, narrowing to f/8 at full telephoto.
To counteract potential image blur from extreme zoom ranges, Nikon has integrated Dual Detect Optical VR, providing vibration reduction equivalent to 4.0 stops at the center of the frame. The P1100 also supports 4K video recording at up to 30p, a 3.2-inch vari-angle LCD monitor, and clean HDMI output for external recording.
Nikon has positioned the P1100 as an ideal camera for bird watchers. To enhance usability, the Bird Watching Mode now includes a selectable AF-area mode, allowing functions to be assigned to the Fn1/Fn2 buttons on the optional ML-L7 Remote Control. This update provides greater flexibility when tracking and capturing fast-moving wildlife.
Additional features include built-in timelapse functionality and a newly introduced fireworks mode, which helps reduce overexposed highlights in long-exposure shots. Nikon has also adopted USB-C for input and output on the P1100, ensuring modern connectivity options.
The Coolpix P1100 is set for release by late February in the US at a rather appropriate retail price of US$1,100 (~RM4,869). No Malaysian release date yet, but for what it’s worth, Nikon Malaysia is already promoting the camera on its Instagram and Facebook accounts.
