The Ministry of Digital and Google Cloud today announced the launch of “AI at Work 2.0,” a joint initiative aimed at equipping up to 445,000 public officers with generative AI tools to enhance government operations and service delivery. This follows a successful pilot conducted in December 2024 the launch of the National AI Office (NAIO), which demonstrated the potential of AI in improving productivity and efficiency within the public sector.
According to Google, the pilot phase, conducted with 270 public officers from various agencies, revealed significant productivity gains. Participants reported an average time saving of 3.25 hours per week, with 97 percent indicating that generative AI had improved their workflow. Encouraged by these results, the Ministry of Digital is now scaling AI at Work 2.0 to extend these benefits across all government departments.
Public officers will now have access to Google Workspace with the Gemini AI suite, which offers a range of tools designed to automate routine administrative tasks, generate insights from large data sets, and streamline content creation. These include essential apps such as Gmail, Docs, Sheet and Meet, along with access to intermediate tools like Google Vids, Gemini Advanced and NotebookLM Plus.
Gemini in Google Workspace applications such as Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Meet will assist officers in drafting reports, summarising emails, and transcribing meetings. Google Vids, an AI-powered video creation tool, will enable agencies to produce explainer videos and training materials efficiently, even for those without prior video production experience. In addition, Gemini Advanced will support coding, data analysis, and administrative tasks, while NotebookLM Plus will serve as an AI-powered research assistant, helping officers extract insights from legislative and policy documents for faster decision-making.
To ensure effective adoption, Google Cloud will provide training and support through hands-on workshops, helping public officers write effective AI prompts and identify areas where AI can enhance productivity. The initiative also prioritises security, with Google Workspace maintaining enterprise-grade data protection and privacy controls to ensure AI-generated insights remain secure and accessible only to authorised users.
Digital minister Gobind Singh Deo, who also attended today’s launch, said the initiative represents a strategic step towards making Malaysia a digitally-driven economy. He added that the government is looking forward to highlighting the tangible value generated by its public-private AI partnerships in the coming months, as AI adoption is driven forward across government agencies and the broader business ecosystem.
“Through AI at Work 2.0 by NAIO and Google Cloud, the government is taking the lead in harnessing gen AI, with the right guardrails built in, to better serve the rakyat under our five-year AI technology action plan,” the digital minister said. “We are swiftly progressing beyond the pilot, which reinforced our belief that AI can uplift the productivity and efficacy of a workforce.”
During a Q&A session, Gobind also confirmed that Google will provide access to the Google Workspace AI suite for up to 445,000 public officers at no charge until 2028. Meanwhile, Deputy Digital Minister Fabian Bigar noted that many government employees are already using Google Workspace through integration between MyGovUC and Google. He emphasised that the partnership will help streamline routine tasks across agencies, departments, and functions, allowing employees to focus on more complex and strategic work that translates into improved public service delivery and citizen engagement.
The AI at Work 2.0 initiative reflects Google’s long-term commitment to Malaysia’s digital transformation. To recap, the company pledged a US$2 billion investment in Malaysia, which includes the development of a new Google data centre and AI skilling programmes.
