After a long wait, Huawei announced that it’s bringing the Mate XT into Malaysia in a couple of weeks. While we wait for the launch, here are my initial thoughts on my brief experience with the brand’s first triple-folding smartphone.
The phone is split into three parts that gives you three different sizing options based on how much of it you unfold, but in reality, it’s actually one big flexible 90Hz LTPO OLED screen. In its unfolded form, the cover screen on its own is already a respectable 6.4 inches, making it completely usable without having to transform it.
Despite its tablet-like full form factor, the phone is surprisingly light relative to its size, owing to its thickness of just 3.6mm at its thinnest point. Even in its candy bar form, it’s only a little bit chunkier than the average smartphone.
When you unfold it once, you get a 7.9-inch display with the cover screen tucked in the back with magnets keeping it from flailing about, giving you a size comparable to most book-style foldables. Unfold it a second time and you will get the entirety of what Huawei has to offer with this phone, revealing something akin to a small 10.2-inch tablet. The creases are minimally noticeable, putting it on par with other bleeding-edge foldable competitors.
Inside, the Mate XT is powered by the company’s own Kirin 9010 chipset along with a dense 5,600mAh battery capacity, which is quite large for a foldable. It supports 66W wired and 50W wireless charging, as well as support for 7.5W wireless and 5W wired reverse charging. For connectivity, it supports 5G, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, and NFC.
The thickest part of the phone, which is the gigantic camera bump, contains a 50MP main camera with OIS and a 10-speed adjustable physical aperture. It also has a 12MP ultra-wide lens and a 12MP telephoto lens that offers 5.5x optical zoom. Up front, the cover screen houses an 8MP selfie snapper.
The Huawei Mate XT will be landing in Malaysia on 18 February 2025, so stay tuned for more.
