The government will implement a 50% toll discount for all festive seasons this year, replacing the previous toll-free initiative. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi stated that this measure, which was first introduced during the Chinese New Year celebration last month, aims to reduce government expenditure on compensating highway concessionaires.
Speaking to reporters during a working visit to the Federal Route FT05 Sungai Besar – Sabak Bernam development today, Nanta explained that providing full toll exemptions would have cost the government RM160 million in compensation to concessionaires. By implementing a 50% discount instead, the cost is halved to RM80 million.
“For Chinese New Year, a 50% discount was given, with the decision made considering that the people still need it (during festive seasons),” he said. “Therefore, the Cabinet has decided to continue this throughout the year during festive seasons, including Aidilfitri and beyond.”
Nanta said the revised toll discount initiative was approved in a previous Cabinet meeting. He also clarified that the cost of the toll discount will be covered by government funds rather than highway concessionaires.
It should also be noted that the Works Minister previously stated the government was reviewing a more targeted approach to replace the toll-free initiative for festive seasons. It is unclear whether the 50% toll discount will fully supersede that plan.
