The government is studying the impact of DeepSeek on Malaysia, according to digital minister Gobind Singh Deo. The evaluation comes as the new AI platform gains traction globally, with reports suggesting its AI model rivals or even surpasses the capabilities of established platforms like OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Speaking during a briefing session at the Arulmigu Sri Maha Mariamman Thirukkovil Temple today, Gobind stated that the government is taking DeepSeek’s potential seriously. He said this is necessary to determine whether it can be adapted for local use to keep pace with the rapid development of the AI landscape.
“In the past, we have seen the emergence of ChatGPT and a lot of other developments in the world of AI, and this is something that is ongoing. We’re going to see even more products unfold as we go along,” Gobind told reporters. “I think it is something that we have to study and ultimately have to look to see how we also can adapt to the technology, moving forward.”
In case you missed it, DeepSeek recently introduced a free AI assistant that reportedly operates with significantly lower requirements and at a fraction of the cost compared to US-developed models. It quickly gained traction, becoming the most downloaded application on Apple’s App Store within days of its release.
