Intel has officially cancelled Falcon Shores, its planned next-generation GPU for high-performance computing and artificial intelligence (A) workloads, shifting its focus toward a new system-level solution called Jaguar Shores. The decision was revealed during the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call, where Intel co-CEO Michelle Johnston Holthaus stated that Falcon Shores will now serve only as an internal test chip and will not be brought to market.
During the earnings call, Holthaus acknowledged Intel’s struggles in the AI data center market, admitting that the company is not yet a significant player in cloud-based AI infrastructure. She described the decision to cancel Falcon Shores as part of a broader effort to simplify Intel’s product roadmap and better allocate resources. Intel’s financial performance in recent quarters has been marked by challenges, with the company seeking to regain its footing after product missteps and losses.
Jaguar Shores is now positioned as Intel’s key AI data center solution, with a focus on delivering a more comprehensive system-level approach at rack scale. Holthaus suggested that simply offering high-performance silicon is no longer enough to meet customer demands, emphasizing the need for fully integrated solutions that include networking, memory, and system-level optimizations.
The cancellation of Falcon Shores comes after earlier signals from Holthaus that the product was an incremental step over its predecessor, the Gaudi 3 AI chip. While Falcon Shores will still play a role in Intel’s internal development efforts, the company is now shifting towards a broader AI infrastructure strategy.
