The completion of KLIA’s Automated People Mover System (Aerotrain) replacement project has been officially delayed by up to five additional months. This is according to Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) managing director Mohd Izan Ghani, who announced that the service is expected to resume operations by the second quarter of 2025, missing its previous 31 January deadline.
Mohd Izan said that the trains are currently undergoing extensive testing and that they are currently waiting for approval for these tests from the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) and the Ministry of Transport before the Aerotrain can return to full service. Earlier this week, MAHB posted a video teasing the upcoming train service, stating, “every nut, bolt, and system is undergoing thorough checks, tests, and retests to ensure the new Aerotrain meets world-class standards.”
This update comes after transport minister Anthony Loke’s public criticism of the project’s delayed timeline, censuring MAHB for likely missing the upcoming January deadline. Pestech International was reappointed as the contractor for this project in 2024 after being terminated the previous year for non-performance.
Two sets of trains from China arrived in Malaysia last September, which entered the installation phase and has since been in the inspection phase. Mohd Izan Ghani guarantees that the resumption of the Aerotrain will not be delayed beyond June 2025 and the project cost remains at RM456 million.
