Getting stuck behind a toll gate because the credits stored in your Touch ‘n Go eWallet was smaller than expected is a stressful experience, to say the least. Aiming to alleviate the stress somewhat is what TNG Digital calls the SOS Balance feature, which lets it cover the toll payment for you.
Unfortunately, there are a handful of caveats to the feature. To start, the Touch ‘n Go eWallet’s SOS Balance can only be used at tolls for now, and only those which are RFID- and PayDirect- enabled. So if you’re in a situation where you could really use th SOS Balance but you’re at a toll plaza that doesn’t support the aforementioned features, you’re stuck regardless.
Then there’s the grace period of only 24 hours. From the FAQ page, you can go through multiple tolls within the same day, but if you don’t clear the toll debt, then all of the payment-related functions of the Touch ‘n Go eWallet, including the SOS Balance feature itself, will be suspended until you do. The flip side is that there’s no additional cost to use it, nor are there additional penalties beyond getting locked out.
Which brings us to the final caveat of the SOS Balance, which is that it won’t be rolled out to all users of the Touch ‘n Go eWallet. Instead, it will only be accessible to users who meet three conditions. They are “clearing all outstanding payments promptly”, “add money frequently to your eWallet” and “actively using their eWallet for transactions”. In other words, only the most loyal of users are getting it. For more on the feature, as well as which toll plazas are eligible, you can find out more by hitting the link below.
