Meta has announced a new Instagram-developed video editing application called Edits. According to Instagram head Adam Mosseri, the app is designed for users who edit videos on their mobile devices, providing a suite of creative tools including higher-quality recordings, shareable drafts, trending audio and detailed insights into video performance. In other words, Edits is pretty much Meta’s answer to Capcut.
The announcement follows recent challenges faced by ByteDance in the United States, which led to the suspension of several of its applications. While TikTok has recently restored its services today in the country after the events following Donald Trump’s inauguration as the 47th president, other apps under its parent company – including Capcut, Lemon8, and Marvel Snap – remain unavailable for the time being.
Despite its timely reveal, the Mosseri insisted that Edits has been in development for months and asserted that it will significantly differ from its rival app once finalised. One advantage offered by Edits over its closest rival is the ability to export videos without watermarks. Additionally, Mosseri says users will have access to an “inspiration tab” and advanced AI editing tools that can be applied to individual clips or entire videos.
Edits is expected to release on 13 March 2025, while users can already register their interest via Apple App Store. Mosseri says an Android version is also in the works, slated for release soon after.
