Apple has paused the display of notification summaries for news and entertainment apps in the latest iOS 18.3 developer beta, according to reports from 9to5Mac. The decision follows criticism of the Apple Intelligence-powered feature, which faced backlash for inaccurately summarising content from news outlets.
As reported by 9to5Mac, Apple plans to reenable the notification summaries in a future software update. In the meantime, the company is refining the feature and has updated the beta to clarify that the notification summary feature is still under development and “may contain errors.”
The reports add that iOS 18.3 beta has introduced new controls to help users manage notification summaries more effectively. Users can now disable summaries for specific apps directly from the lock screen or Notification Center by swiping on the notification, selecting “Options,” and choosing “Turn Off Summaries.” Additionally, Apple has implemented italicized text on the lock screen to distinguish notification summaries from standard notifications.
Notification summaries were first introduced with the launch of Apple Intelligence in iOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1. Shortly after their release, the feature faced criticism for spreading misinformation through inaccurate summaries of article headlines, leading to negative press surrounding the feature. In response, Apple said it will release updates to improve the feature and make it clearer when summaries are generated.
