Transport minister Anthony Loke has called out Malaysia Airport Holdings Bhd (MAHB) for the delay in completing KLIA’s Automated People Mover System (Aerotrain). It was initially expected to be completed by 31 January 2025, but inspections reveal that it will be impossible to the train to start operations by that deadline.
The minister added that the contractor has not confirmed a date for when the project and that he was unhappy with the matter. The trains that have arrived are apparently still being tested by the contractor, with no indication of when the trains will actually be ready to roll out to the public.
To recap, MAHB awarded Pestech International with a contract to upgrade the Aerotrain and maintain it for 10 years back in 2021, as the system was approaching its end of life after commencing operations in 1998. In March 2023, the train services were suspended due to mechanical and electronic failures and following this incident, Pestech’s contract was terminated due to non-performance.
However, in January 2024, Pestech was then reappointed as the contractor for the project with an expedited timeline. Two sets of trains from China arrived in Malaysia last September, which entered the installation phase followed by the inspection phase.
