OpenAI is testing a new feature to ChatGPT to make it more than just an AI chatbot. In fact, the company wants you to use it as a more sophisticated reminder app of sorts. Aptly, the feature is simply called Tasks, and it’s currently in early beta.
The idea behind the feature is let schedule a task for ChatGPT ahead of time, and it will execute said task when the time comes. According to the help page for the feature, you can either access it from the pop-up menu, or by telling the chatbot itself to set one up for you. That last one would require you to select the “ChatGPT with scheduled tasks” option from the dropdown menu at the top of the screen.
Simpler uses of the Tasks feature is to simply remind you of, say, someone’s birthday. But setting the feature apart is the ability for it to also execute more complex prompts like “summarise AI news every week”, as shown by a screenshot on the page. OpenAI does note that these tasks will execute even if you’re offline at the time, but for what it’s worth, you’ll be sent a push notification or email when a task is complete.
In addition to being in early beta, there are other additional limits in terms of accessibility of the Tasks via ChatGPT. Most important of them is the fact that, while it is in beta, it is only available to paying users – so those with a Plus, pro or Team plan – though OpenAI says access will be expanded when it gets to a general release. Another is that it is only supported on web, iOS, macOS and Android for now, with support for the Windows app coming later within Q1 of the year.
