We’ve previously seen reports of the state of Sarawak expressing interest in acquiring MASwings from the Malaysia Airlines, with six international routes planned following the takeover. More recently, state premier Abang Johari Openg is reported to have said that the deal has been concluded.
The Star quotes the premier as saying “MASwings beres (is settled). This means we have taken over MASwings”. He added that the deal concluded over an agreed price, though the exact figure was not disclosed. Also mentioned was a signing ceremony for the takeover, which would happen in a month’s time, which is likely to happen in the state capital Kuching.
Following the acquisition, MASwings will also be given a new name by the state. As for what it is, the premier said it would be announced after the signing ceremony. The report notes that the statements were given following his special address, in conjunction with his eight anniversary as premier of Sarawak.
Previously, the acquisition deal between Sarawak and the Malaysia Aviation Group, the group of which Malaysia Airlines is a member, was set to conclude by 31 December 2024. Having missed the deadline due to differences in asset valuation, a new deadline of within the first quarter of 2025 was set.
