Eyewear is usually not something we expect to see at CES 2025, but a brand named Chamelo has been at the event’s show floor showing off something pretty neat, but pricey. It’s showcasing the Aura Rx, which are prescription smart glasses, but it’s not smart because it’s a Google Glass-esque type of product. Instead, it’s smart because it can change its tint colour with a push of a button.
For context, the company did have a run last year, as according to VentureBeat, that’s when the Chamelo Aura, the model without prescription glasses, was first launched. The report quotes CEO Reid Covington, as saying that the company got more requests to support prescription glasses, more than any additional tech.
What makes the Chamelo Aura Rx work is via a patented lens architecture, with a flexible liquid crystal film sitting in between two “precision crafted lenses”. A prescription range of +/- 100 to +/- 600 is supported. There are also two different lens tech in play with one of them being Prismatic which allows for the lenses to switch between four colours – cool clear, blue, purple and ruby. Then there’s EclipseTM, which allows for adjustment between four levels of tint.
Because it still contains electronics to make it work, the Chamelo Aura Rx has an IPX4 rating, so while it can get a bit wet, you’d still want to avoid it. IN the same vein, it can last over a week on a single charge, with flat to 80% taking 30 minutes.
According to the report, the Chamelo Aura RX will be available for purchase starting February, for a starting price of US$385 (~RM1,734). For what it’s worth, the official website does show prices in RM, with the previous Aura non-prescription model being priced at RM1,761.
