A current, and maybe oft-forgotten shortcut on Android devices is the ability to launch the camera app by quickly double-pressing the power button. This shortcut may work differently by default, as code within the second developer preview of Android 16 points to it serving to launch the device’s default digital wallet app instead.
As Android Authority reports, a new config called “config_walletDoubleTapPowerGestureEnabled” has been seen in said developer preview. This would probably mean the Google Wallet out of the box, though with the current OS version, users have since been able to freely change their default digital wallet app.
That being said, the above line of code was the only reference to the feature found in the developer preview. For now, it’s unclear if it will truly be taking over the default camera app shortcut, or if new options will be made available for either of them.
The report also notes that the code does not specifically mention what sort of device the shortcut is for. Though it’s worth noting that there are WearOS devices that already use the double-pressing of the power button as the shortcut to launch the digital wallet apps. Perhaps a rarity for Android devices, but an alternative would an equivalent to Back Tap instead of the power button.
