If you’ve ever wondered if Apple’s Siri was listening in and recording your conversations without your knowledge, the good news is that: no, you weren’t crazy. The fruit company recently decided to settle a five year old class action lawsuit over privacy issue with the voice assistant.
According to Reuters, Apple agreed to pay US$95 million (~RM427) to all members in the lawsuit. Given that involves tens of millions of people who own Siri-enabled devices – iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, the works – that’s around US$20 (~RM90) per person.
The lawsuit against Siri was first filed in 2019, based on a report that Apply quality control contractors were able to listen in on “sensitive info” that were accidentally recorded by the “Hey Siri” feature. Said sensitive information included clips detailing people’s medical information, criminal activities, as well as very personal “sexual encounters”.
Another two US plaintiffs claimed that they got bombarded with ads from Nike and an Italian-American chain shortly after they mentioned “key words” like Nike Air Jordans and Olive Garden within earshot of the voice assistant.
