For an AI company like OpenAI, it’s probably not too farfetched to expect it to have also dabbled in robotics. This was true once upon a time, and according to a recent report, it may be true once more. That being said, it’s not exactly clear what sort of plans the company has for this robot, should the company actually decide to make it.
The Information cites two sources with “direct knowledge” of the matter that the ChatGPT company may be looking to develop a humanoid robot. This follows reports from a few months ago that OpenAI was speaking to Broadcom about making its own AI chips.
Up until 2021, the ChatGPT company did have its own robotics division dedicated to developing AI models for autonomous machines. The division was not without achievements of its own though, with one of them being a robotic arm capable of solving a Rubik’s cube.
Despite the division’s shut down, OpenAI never truly left the field of robotics, even if its involvement is a lot less direct. Rather than developing its own robots, the company has instead been investing financially into robotic startups such as Figure and 1X. But with all that being said, it’s unclear what prompted OpenAI’s desire to return to robotics.
