Google Keep is just one of the many note taking apps out there for mobile devices. But being one that bears the name of the internet search giant, you’d probably use it over all others thanks to it just working well with the Google account you need just to use an Android phone. Probably with that in mind, the humble app is seemingly getting a promotion once the next mobile OS version rolls around.
According to Android Police, the latest beta for Android 16 shows signs of Google Keep being upgraded to a system app. This designation is usually reserved for apps that come pre-installed with Android phones, and can’t be uninstalled unless you have root access. The report claims that the upgrade may mean that it is getting “more powerful features” as well as playing “a more central role in Android 16”.
All that being said, the beta for the next Android release doesn’t demonstrate what’s new with Google Keep to justify the increase in rank. The report includes speculation that this may mean that the app can be launched straight from the lock screen. Or, on the flip side, it may simply be a way for the internet search giant to make its own app more popular than all the other alternatives out there.
Of course, for now there’s no way to know for sure what the company has planned for its Google Keep app. We’ll likely only find out either when the company makes an official announcement, or more code gets added to the next beta versions of Android 16 for sleuths to dig up.
