Rumours have it that AMD is planning to discontinue the production of the Radeon RX 7900 GRE. If this is true, it would be the first Radeon RX 7000 Series to be hit with the end-of-life notice.
News of AMD’s supposed decision to cease production of the 7900 GRE was first reported by the Dutch outlet, Tweakers. While we aren’t trying to be mean, it also doesn’t help that the card hasn’t been selling well around the world, let alone in Malaysia, and to that end, the card is becoming increasingly difficult to find as well.
“A manufacturer of AMD graphics cards confirms that the RX 7900 GRE has been declared ‘ end-of-life ‘, after Tweakers received a tip about it from a store. They also indicate that they have heard from multiple suppliers that the graphics card will not return. This means that the graphics card will be taken off sale, although it will continue to receive software updates.”
The Radeon RX 7900 GRE first came into existence as a special edition for the Chinese market in July 2023, the moniker in its name being an acronym for “Golden Rabbit Edition”. Basically, it’s a watered-down variant of the 7900 XT that launched at the end of 2022, just with a smaller Navi 31 XL die and 256-bit memory bus.
AMD is expected to announce its next generation RDNA4 architecture at CES 2025 next year. If the report is true, then discontinuing the RDNA3 GPU is part of its strategy to offer an RDNA4 GPU with similar performance but at a much lower and competitive price point.
