The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has addressed concerns circulating on social media regarding licence renewal requirements for senior citizen drivers, dismissing claims of new conditions as false. Via a statement shared on Facebook, the department clarified that no additional requirements, such as competency or physical examinations, have been introduced for renewing Malaysian driving licences.
“For the record, the Transport Ministry and JPJ have not imposed any additional requirements for senior citizens to renew their driving licence (LLM),” said JPJ Director-General Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli. “The renewal process for LMM remains, subject to the existing conditions and standard operating procedure (SOP) under the Road Transport Act 1987.”
JPJ is advising the public to exercise caution when sharing information online and to verify the accuracy of any claims to prevent the spread of misinformation. Aedy underscored the importance of referring to official statements or directly contacting JPJ for accurate updates on licence renewal processes.
Currently, JPJ nor the Ministry of Transport (MOT) has no age limit for drivers, nor are there plans to introduce one. However, it should be noted that Section 30(3) of the Road Transport Act 1987 mandates that all drivers, regardless of age, must ensure they are in good health to operate a vehicle safely.
