OpenAI has been steadily making its ChatGPT accessible in more and more ways, with the latest method being via WhatsApp messages. This can be done by texting the number 1-800-242-8478, or 1-800-ChatGPT if you remember what it was like to type text messages with feature phones.
Because you’re using the chatbot this way, and there’s no way to log into your OpenAI account via WhatsApp yet, your use experience will be comparable to using ChatGPT while not logged in. This means no images in your chats, and you can’t use the search feature either. Naturally, you also won’t be able to add the chatbot to group chats.
As with using ChatGPT without signing in elsewhere, you also only get a limited number of messages a day to prompt the chatbot for free. OpenAI does not share the specific number, but the company says that you’ll be informed when you approach the limit, as well as when you hit it.
If you happen to be in the US or Canada, you can even make voice calls to use ChatGPT, by calling the same number mentioned above. Limits here are stricter, with an allowance of only 15 minutes per month for each phone number. For both voice calls and WhatsApp texts, OpenAI says that these may be adjusted “based on capacity if needed”.
