Modders in China have modded a PlayStation 5 (PS5), transforming the console into a laptop. Sort of, anyway.
The PS5 laptop, known officially as the BBook AI Original Edition, is built using 3D-printed parts, along with a considerable amount of custom cooling tweaks. One of the key highlights of the machine is the 4K display that is attached to it. It only has a maximum refresh rate of 60Hz but it does boast a 100% DCI-P3 colour gamut, along with 400 nits peak brightness. Oh, and it’s 17.3-inches.
Internally, the BBook uses the standard PS5 components, including the AMD Zen2 CPU and RDNA2 GPU, 16GB GDDR6 unified memory, and 825GB of storage. One downside to the console is the lack of a built-in battery and the need to be constantly plugged in. That, and the power supply isn’t even built into the machine. For that matter, it’s also a chonky system, weighing in excess of 4kg.
The other drawback to the PS5 laptop? The system’s cooling system is anything but quiet. When running at full load, the system reportedly hits a noise level of 71.3 dB. If you’re wondering how loud that is: imagine having a washing machine and dryer running at the same, right in the middle of an open office. Yeah, that’s how loud it is.
The other caveat to the BBook is the price. The modders responsible for this Frankenstein of a portable PS5 has priced it at a 19,999 yuan, which is US$2,750 or approximately RM12,244. That costs way more than the standard PS5 console, and still more than if you bought the console and a 4K TV, separately or as a bundle.
