Nissan has unveiled plans for its lineup at the upcoming Tokyo Auto Salon, featuring a modified R32 Skyline GT-R converted into a full electric vehicle (EV). Known as the R32EV Concept, this transformation may stir mixed reactions among fans, as it involves reimagining the classic sports car with modern electrification.
The R32EV project began in March 2023 within Nissan Works, spearheaded by a team of volunteer engineers. Their goal was to preserve the charm and performance legacy of the original R32 GT-R while integrating advanced EV technology. The automaker has also documented the conversion’s progress on its official X account, sharing up to 14 short video installments as of this writing.

While Nissan has not confirmed the powertrain used in the R32EV, it could potentially adopt the dual-motor system from the Ariya Nismo. This setup delivers 429 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque, far surpassing the original GT-R’s 276 hp and 271 lb-ft figures. However, it is likely that Nissan will use a different power source for the conversion, as the SUV’s 91kWh battery would be too large to fit in the car’s design.
The one-off R32EV will be showcased at the Tokyo Auto Salon from 10 to 12 January 2025, held at Makuhari Messe in Chiba City. Just to clarify, this event is distinct from the Kuala Lumpur version, which is often scheduled for later in the year.
