2025 is shaping up to be a year for many video game publishers, with Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) setting the tone as one of the year’s blockbuster titles. The thing is, the game still hasn’t been given a specific launch date and because of that, virtually every major game studio is refusing to commit their own release dates.
Jason Schreier at Bloomberg writes that some publishers are holding off from committing to a release date for their game, simply because they want to avoid a clash with GTA 6. Right now, they just want to be sure that the Rockstar Games’ IP will be launching sometime in Autumn 2025, and not get delayed into 2026. Which could actually happen and it’s not an uncommon practice – it’s encouraged, even – because of some last-minute polishing or tweaking.
GTA 6 has been on the bucket list of every gamer and fan of the franchise. The last major instalment, GTA V, came out more than a decade ago, to critical acclaim. The franchise is also a major revenue stream for Take Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company. Since 2013, it has earned more than US$9 billion (~RM39.9 billion) and have sold more than 205 million copies throughout.
GTA 6 will bring players back to San Andreas, a city in the GTA universe that was first introduced with the launch of GTA San Andreas, back in 2004.
