Apple has officially rolled out the long-awaited iOS 18.2, PadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2 updates, bringing more of its promised AI features. Moreover, the update expands Apple Intelligence’s language support for localised English, which now includes, Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and the U.K. This means that Malaysians intending to enable these AI features no longer have to change their device settings to U.S. English.
The highlight of the update is, of course, the ChatGPT integration, which enables Siri and Writing Tools to use OpenAI’s model for things that Apple can’t handle on its own. Siri, on its part, will suggest the use of ChatGPT for certain requests, with the response being relayed to the user directly through the digital assistant.
The integration even adds a “Compose” feature and a “Describe Your Change” option in the Writing Tools repertoire. This allows users to either make content from scratch or have AI change existing content by just describing what they want.
While access to the model is available to all users for free, the use of it is optional, hence the suggestions from Siri instead of it handing over the requests automatically. It can be used without an account, meaning that OpenAI will not store requests and use the data for model training. If you do have an account and choose to connect it, however, OpenAI’s data-use policies apply.
Another big update is the addition of Visual Intelligence, exclusive to the iPhone 16 lineup and activated by long-pressing Camera Control. This feature is Apple’s rival to Google Lens, allowing users to summarise and copy text, translate text between languages, detect phone numbers or email addresses with the option to add to contacts. Moreover, aside from text, you can point it at any object or place and either use Google Image to search for it or ask ChatGPT about it.
There are also three new generative AI features. There’s Genmoji, which lets you create custom emojis by typing a description, Image Playground that allows you to generate images through descriptions, and Image Wand, a tool for the Notes app that lets you create images through the context of notes.
As with before, the new Apple Intelligence features in iOS 18 are only available on the iPhone 16 series, the iPhone 15 Pro series, iPads with A17 Pro or M1 and later, and Macs with M1 and later. Starting next April, the company will add support for several other languages including Chinese, English (India), English (Singapore), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Vietnamese.
