The Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) will soon see the addition of 40 more autogates at immigration clearance points. This is on top of the new QR code system for both of the airport’s terminals.
According to immigration director-general Zakaria Shaaban, there will an additional 10 autogates at both the arrival and departure halls of terminals 1 and 2, totalling 40 autogates to improve the wait time. With the integration of QR codes and facial recognition, the initiative aims to cut the current clearance time of 10 to 15 seconds down to under just five seconds.
These improvements are currently at the procurement stage and are expected to be completed by the end of this year. Zakaria added that the automated system is meant to eliminate corruption by preventing anyone from manipulating or tampering with the system. If there is a system issue, the director-general said that it will automatically block or restrict the user.
KLIA 1 and 2 currently have a total of 54 autogates combined. Starting 1 June 2024, Malaysia now allows visitors from a total of 63 countries to clear immigration using the autogates, up from the previous list of just 10 countries. Meanwhile, the government is set to roll out the use of a QR code system for motorists crossing the land borders between Johor and Singapore.
