A report by Bloomberg is claiming that Intel is eyeing Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Technologies Johny Srouji to take over as CEO, after Pat Gelsinger’s departure earlier this month. If true, this actually wouldn’t be the first time that the company allegedly shortlisted the iPhone’s maker’s executive.
According to sources such as AppleInsider, the company purportedly reached out to Srouji back in 2019, when former CEO Brian Krzanich was leaving the company. However, it is said that he “didn’t seriously consider the job” at the time, as he was focused on developing the first Apple Silicon chips for its Mac devices.
Srouji joined Apple in 2008 to oversee the development of the A4, Apple’s first custom chip that powered the first-generation iPad and iPhone 4. He was then promoted to his current position in 2015 and can be regularly seen introducing the company’s new silicon chips during its virtual keynotes.
It’s unclear whether Srouji would accept a new offer from Intel, but this seems unlikely given that his work at Apple has become increasingly notable. This is especially after the introduction of Apple Silicon, which led Apple to ditch the partnership with the chipmaker altogether.
On a related note, a report by Reuters is also claiming that Intel is looking outside of the company for potential candidates to fill up the CEO position. Interestingly, one of those shortlisted allegedly includes Malaysian-born Lip-Bu Tan, who previously served as a member of the company’s board until this year.
