OpenAI’s Sora video generation model is ready for public use, but only if you’re on the platform’s ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscription. According to the company, the highly anticipated tool is now available in the US as well as select countries, including Malaysia. However, OpenAI’s announcement notes that Sora won’t be available in the United Kingdom, Switzerland and the European Economic Area
The version available to ChatGPT subscribers is Sora Turbo, which is a more powerful model than what was previewed back in February. While faster, OpenAI notes that it still has limitations, where unrealistic physics and “struggles with complex actions over long durations” are noticeable in generated videos.
Instead of ChatGPT’s website, users currently can only access the video generation tool via its dedicated website. From there, you’ll be greeted with a video feed of creations made by other users, as well as the ability to generate your own through text prompt. Additionally, clicking on an existing video reveals the original prompts used, along with giving you the ability to re-cut, remix, or blend it into your own projects.
According to OpenAI, Sora generates videos up to 1080p resolution and 20 seconds long in its initial release. However, note that ChatGPT Plus users can produce up to 50 videos per month at 480p or fewer at 720p, while Pro subscribers gain 10 times the usage, higher resolutions, and longer durations.
Each video includes a visible watermark and C2PA metadata for identification. OpenAI enforces strict safeguards, preventing the creation of CSAM, sexual deepfakes, or other misuse. The company is also limiting uploads involving real people until it strengthens its defences against deepfakes.
In case you missed it, OpenAI only offers the Plus tier in Malaysia, priced at RM99.90 per month. The company says it is planning customised pricing tiers for Sora next year.
