Malaysian bus passengers and motorcyclists travelling through the two land checkpoints with Singapore will soon rely solely on the MyBorderPass app for faster immigration clearance, The Star reports. This follows the government’s decision to pick one of three QR validation apps that were placed on trial to facilitate smoother movement between Johor and Singapore, especially with the upcoming Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone. The apps in question include MyBorderPass, along with MyRentas and MyTrip.
Since June, the apps have been tested at different checkpoints: MyTrip at the Sultan Abu Bakar CIQ Complex (KSAB), and MyRentas and MyBorderPass at the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar CIQ in Johor Baru (BSI). The trial of the three apps concluded on 30 November 2024.
The Star notes that BSI’s bus lanes have recently transitioned to MyBorderPass, with the app incorporating QR code and facial recognition features. The six motorcycle lanes at BSI already use the app, and KSAB is expected to adopt it soon. Additionally, on-location personnel are available to assist passengers in navigating the system.
State transportation committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh welcomed the selection of MyBorderPass, emphasising its benefits in streamlining the process and reducing confusion. Facial recognition technology, already effective for motorcyclists, is expected to expedite bus passenger clearance as well. He added that backup options, such as QR codes and manual counters, remain available.
Mohamad Fazli notes that the QR code system for cars and lorries is currently in the proof-of-concept stage, as it must account for multiple passengers – including both Malaysians and foreigners – within a single vehicle. The state plans to eventually extend QR code and facial recognition technology to all foreign travellers, akin to the autogate system at airports.
