Samsung seems to have made a breakthrough in gaming display panels. Supposedly, the Korean electronics giant has managed to make a Quantum Dot OLED (QD-OLED) panel with a maximum resolution of QHD (2,560 x 1,440) and more importantly, it has a maximum refresh rate of 500Hz, according to Korean news outlet, ETNews.
“According to industry sources on the 24th, Samsung Display is developing a 27-inch quantum dot (QD)-OLED panel with a QHD (2560×1440) resolution that implements a 500Hz refresh rate. The development is currently in the final stages, and commercialization is being discussed with major monitor manufacturers for release in the first half of next year. This panel is expected to be mounted on gaming monitors for games with fast screen-switching speeds.”
Display panels with ultra-high refresh rates aren’t as highly sought after by the general consumers but for Esports players, they’ve been proven to benefit them. Although, an argument can be made that the difference between 360Hz, let alone 480Hz, and 500Hz provides any visible difference to the untrained eye.
As to which brand will adopt Samsung’s ultra-high refresh rate 1440p display, we have some inkling who would be early adopters. Besides itself, ASUS and MSI are two potential clients, especially when you look back at the monitors they’ve released this year.
