The Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry (MITI) is working together with the Johor and Selangor state governments to ensure that each district in these respective states has at least one direct current (DC) fast charger for electric vehicles (EVs). This is according to its deputy minister Liew Chin Tong, who announced the initiative as part of the government’s measures to achieve its target of 10,000 EV charging stations by 2025.
He revealed that currently, there are 500 DC chargers across the country, with MITI raising its target from 1,000 units to 1,500 units by 2025, recognising that this type of charger plays a critical role by significantly reducing charging time. Liew also said that the pilot project hopes to cover all districts in Selangor and Johor.
Previously, deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof said that the government was aiming to reach the goal of 10,000 charging stations by 2030, with a target of 4,000 charging stations by next year. The total number of EV charging stations in Malaysia, including those with DC fast chargers, currently stands at over 2,000.
Earlier this year, Schneider Electric launched its first public EV charging hub in Petaling Jaya, equipping it with a 180kW DC fast charger. Partnering with local charging network operator JusEV, it plans to install over 100 chargers in private and commercial buildings this year with 10% of those being DC chargers.
