After four years, Apple finally made another announcement related to the AirPods Max since its initial unveiling in 2020. But when it appeared at the September launch event, all it got were new colours, and a USB-C port rather than the old Lightning connector. And it may well be the only changes that the bitten fruit headphones are getting.
Mark Gurman of Bloomberg claims in the subscriber-only section of his weekly Power On newsletter as much, noting that Apple has “no concrete plans” for further updates, at least for now. It doesn’t look like the company is ending production of the AirPods Max, which points to the current iteration likely being the last one, unless minds are changed at the C-suite.
This means that fans of the headphones waiting for a version with Adaptive Audio compatibility may be in for disappointment. If you’re wondering, the tech is a blend of both ANC and transparency modes, which is primarily granted by the company’s newer H2 chip. The AirPods Max, though, runs on the H1.
While it will continue to be sold, the newsletter notes that these Apple headphones hasn’t sold well enough to justify further upgrades. The AirPods Max may get further firmware updates, but that’s about it, as the report notes the brand’s waning interest in the product.
