Thanks to a tip by user Tenent Jason on Facebook, we’ve now learned that Spotify has recently made a significant change to its Premium Family plan, which now only supports four shared accounts instead of six. This shift was apparently made earlier this month, according to a notice sent to applicable subscribers via email.
In the message, Spotify revealed that the six-account Premium Family plan has been discontinued and is replaced by the new four-account version instead, with pricing maintained at RM24.90 per month. It added that if users wish to continue having six members as part of their subscription, they are required to purchase two additional slots separately.
However, the streaming service did not disclose the cost of the add-on in the email. According to Tenant Jason and members of our forum, retaining the six-account setup will now cost users RM40.70 per month, an increase of RM15.80 over the original subscription.
It remains unclear whether Spotify allows only an increment of two accounts for Premium Family or charges subscribers per additional member. The streaming service also did not say what is the maximum number of supported accounts for the plan, now that this change is in play.
This isn’t the first time Spotify has attempted to optimise its subscription offerings to boost revenue. On multiple occasions, the streaming service has tried to restrict its family plan to users living under the same roof, aiming to encourage subscriptions to its RM15.90 individual plans. Additionally, Spotify Malaysia previously increased the pricing for all of its plans in October last year.
Thanks Tenent Jason for the tip!
