Previously, we saw the ChatGPT company OpenAI dip its toes into search engines, and integrated into its existing apps. This can be seen as a move to take on Google. More recently, reports note of another move the AI company may be making against the incumbent internet search giant, with the company considering developing its own web browser.
The Information reports that OpenAI would combine said web browser with its chatbot. Separately, the company has also discussed striking deals to power search features, having spoken to website and app developers like Conde Nast, Redfin, Eventbrite and Priceline about it.
Also noted in the report is OpenAI having discussed powering the AI features on Samsung devices, but it’s unclear what these would look like. It could mirror the deal that the company has with Apple, with ChatGPT integration with iOS being underway. On the flip side, it could be as simple as getting SearchGPT to be the default search engine instead.
All that being said, the report mentions that “OpenAI is not remotely close to launching a browser”. It may take awhile for any of this to manifest, if at all.
