Apple is apparently working on a more conversational version of its virtual assistant Siri as it attempts to catch up to AI rivals like OpenAI’s ChatGPT. According to a Bloomberg report, the digital voice assistant will use advanced large language models (LLMs) to allow for back-and-forth conversations.
Moreover, the people that were cited as sources said that Siri will be able to handle more sophisticated requests in a quicker fashion. The revamped voice assistant, which is dubbed “LLM Siri” by the people working on it, will eventually be added to Apple Intelligence. The LLM has apparently been tested by the company on iPhones, iPads and Macs as a separate app, but it will ultimately replace the current Siri interface.
The report claims that the tech giant will announce the overhaul next year as part of the iOS 19 and macOS 16 updates, which are internally named Luck and Cheer respectively. Similar to Apple Intelligence, the features that will be announced will not immediately be shipped with its next generation of devices, but instead, the company plans on rolling out the new Siri in the spring of 2026.
Part of the upgrade will include the ability for the AI to use Apple Intelligence’s writing tools and more expanded use of App Intents, which lets it have precise control of third-party apps. The brand recently rolled out new features for Siri such as text prompts and the ability to retain context from previous prompts. With the upcoming release of iOS 18.2, which is expected to come around next month, Apple will be integrating ChatGPT into its ecosystem.
