E-commerce platform Shopee has announced that it is doubling the limit of of its ShopeePay e-wallet for verified users. Going through the eKYC verification process will see users get their accounts upgraded to Premium Accounts, and said accounts will see their e-wallet limit go from RM4,999 to RM9,999 starting 4 December.
The announcement also points to the verification process being changed slightly as well. Where previously all you needed to do is provide a shot of your MyKad though the Shopee mobile app, it looks like video verification has been added to the process. Though it is the only additional step to an already pretty simple procedure that would likely take more time to process in the background than on the user’s part.
With the announcement making no mention of the basic account, it looks like the e-wallet limit for those who did not go through the verification process will remain at RM2,999. At least at the time of writing, when the two linked support pages have yet to be updated.
In the announcement Shopee says that “we highly encourage users to complete the eKYC to avoic facing any potential service limitations in the future”. While it’s unclear in what way these limitations will present themselves, as it is now the increase of the already very generous e-wallet limit would probably benefit only the heaviest of shoppers.
