Windows 11, like all of the previous operating system versions, have had a history of strange bugs. Recently, with a recent 24H2 update, there has been one that inexplicable bumps your system’s volume output to 100%. Microsoft has acknowledged the problem, but it looks like there will be quite a wait before a fix is ready.
In its support page, Microsoft notes that the audio bug with the Windows 11 24H2 update is to do with a “timing problem in the AudioEndpointBuilder service”. Reproducing the bug also involves one or more of these things – using a Creative Sound BlasterX G6 USB DAC, manually putting your system to sleep and then waking it up, attach and immediately detach the DAC, or adjusting the volume of the DAC and then immediately detaching it.
Microsoft also notes that when the bug does occur and your volume slider brings itself to the maximum, Windows 11 doesn’t show you any sort of error message. To minimise damage, it would probably be better to adjust your external sound system in a way that assumes your PC’s volume is always at 100%.
As mentioned earlier, despite identifying the issue and the conditions that trigger the bug, a fix is still being worked on. Microsoft notes on the page that more information will be provided when available, but that’s about it. When a fix does become available, it will likely be pushed out as another update.
