The Sabah state government has plans to establish an Artificial Intelligence (AI) centre. Bernama cites Sabah minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Mohd Artiffin Mohd Arif as saying that the initiative was part of a move to drive digital transformation.
According to the report, the minister told the State Legislative Assembly that it was part of the state government’s efforts to support the state’s digital ecosystem. he was quoted as saying “our goal is to attract investment, nurture local talent, and foster innovation in various sectors”.
In recent times, other states such as Pahang have had plans of their own to attract investments from the data centre industry. Though these were not expressly stated to be for AI, these were still noted to be important for the state’s chances of economic growth.
Previously, deputy comms minister Teo Nie Ching claimed that Malaysia is on track to achieve RM3.6 billion in revenue in 2025 in the data centre industry. A little more recently, prime minister Anwar Ibrahim has said that the Malaysian government will improve on laws and regulations surrounding data protection. He also mentioned that AI is considered crucial for digital transformation of the economy, and that Malaysia is capable of bringing in significant investment in the field.
