Ever since its reboot called A Realm Reborn, Final Fantasy XIV has been going from strength to strength, being one of the most successful MMORPGs out there. After 11 years, it looks like the game is branching off into a new direction, with the announcement of a mobile version of the game, simply called Final Fantasy XIV Mobile.
It is being made by Tencent subsidiary LightSpeed Studios, with Naoki Yoshida – the producer and director of the real deal – supervising its production. All that aside though, things look to be still very early in the process. The announcement notes that playtests are coming “soon” to China first, with a global launch “soon after”, with no specific date or launch window.
Also noted in the announcement is that Final Fantasy XIV Mobile will be “a sister” title to the main game, and that LightSpeed Studios will be recreating just about everything faithfully for the mobile platform. This hints at the two being separate instances of the game, though one can hope that it would do the Warframe thing and actually be a mobile port with shared cross-platform progression.
Though it still leaves some questions unanswered, such as if it will be a free-to-play title or if it will be using the same subscription model. Also included in the list is which mobile platform with Final Fantasy XIV Mobile be on – conventional wisdom would suggest that it will be on both iOS and Android, but as with the Warframe example above, one may appear before the other, or one of those options may not happen at all. Either way, all we can do is to wait until more details are shared.
