Transport minister Anthony Loke revealed in parliament today that his ministry plans on introducing a fee for people to print a driving licence. This comes as the minister himself acknowledged that many Malaysians still want a physical card for their licence, adding that the initiative will be announced next year.
He said that the digitalisation efforts of the Road Transport Department (JPJ) would continue with further improvements to enhance the system. Loke did not specify how much it will cost to print the physical cards.
In 2023, Malaysia transitioned to using only digital copies of driving licences as well as road tax documents. Now, those who get a new driving licence or renew an expired licence will only receive a digital copy through the MyJPJ app, which can be used as a legal document during roadblocks and such.
Many Malaysians on social media have complained about difficulties using the digital driving licence overseas as most countries still require a physical copy. Regarding this issue, Loke previously responded by advising people to just print the digital documents if necessary, but some have pointed out that outside of Malaysia, self-printed driving licences are not legally recognised.
