Microsoft, during its Ignite 2024 keynote, has introduced a new device, the Windows 365 Link, which is designed to simplify access to cloud computing. It is purpose-built for connecting users to the internet and streaming the Windows operating system directly from the cloud. Despite its similarity to compact computers as well as Apple’s Mac mini, the device operates primarily as a gateway; where all applications, software and files are accessed remotely, with no local storage required.
Windows 365 Link is compact, fanless, and easy to set up. It is designed to work seamlessly with Microsoft’s Windows 365 service, enabling businesses to shift employees to virtual cloud-based PCs. It can be securely accessed from various devices, making the Link an ideal choice for organisations looking to modernise their IT infrastructure.
The compact PC prioritises security, leveraging Microsoft’s experience in locking down Windows and Xbox platforms to prevent unauthorised access. Its lightweight operating system is designed solely to connect users swiftly and securely to their Windows 365 cloud PCs.
Windows 365 Link offers snappy performance, booting up in seconds and waking instantly from sleep. It is equipped with an undisclosed Intel processor, 8GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage, while connectivity features include multiple USB ports (USB-A and USB-C), DisplayPort, HDMI, ethernet, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.3. The device is said to be capable of supporting dual 4K monitors simultaneously.
Microsoft plans to collaborate with OEM partners to produce Windows 365 Link devices, expanding the Cloud PC category beyond its first-party offerings. The company says it is initially focused on perfecting the user experience with its own devices, but aims to scale the range of options through partnerships starting in 2025.
Set to be available in April 2025 at $349 (~RM1,558) for select markets, the Windows 365 Link will initially target enterprise users. It requires a Windows 365 subscription, along with Microsoft Intune and Microsoft Entra ID for management. Microsoft has yet to confirm whether the new device will be offered in Malaysia.
